Typical progression of gaze stability exercise program
Physical therapy visit | Exercise type |
---|---|
Week 1 | X1 far, balance exercises |
Week 2 | X1 near and far, 2 target, balance exercises |
Week 3 | X1 near and far, X2, 2-target, balance exercises |
Week 4 | X1 near and far, X2, 2-target, imaginary target, balance exercises |
Week 5 | X1 near while walking, X1 far, X2, 2-target, imaginary target, balance exercises |
Week 6 | X1 near while walking, X2, 2-target, imaginary target, balance exercises, establish discharge program |
X1 – times 1, patient moves head while looking at a still target, near (3′) or far (10′).
X2 – times 2, patient moves head one direction while looking at a target that moves in the opposite direction.
2-target – patient first moves eyes to a target and while keeping eyes focused on the target, then moves the head to align with the same target.
Imaginary target - Subject focuses on target, closes eyes and moves head – attempting to keep eyes fixated on the target.
Walk with head rotation – patient walks and moves head side-side or up-down.
Balance exercises – different standing or walking exercises that challenge the patients’ base of support, center of mass, or limits of stability.
