What are the major Internet domain names and what are their agendas?
.com, for-profit organizations—selling products and services
.org, nonprofit organizations—selling or promoting ideas, advocacy, services; fund-raising
.gov, governmental agencies—representing current political policies, promoting services; health sites based on scientific research, which is often funded by industrial or pharmaceutical organizations
.edu, universities and colleges—recruiting students, hosting research as well as student work
.net, network and communications services providers—selling products and services, hosting personal web sites
How do you know you can trust the information?
Source or producers of the Web site—note their credentials and experience
Currency—note the date the information was written, reviewed, and updated
Attribution or references—note the citations of documents the Web site uses
Funding—note the type of organizations funding the site
