Each panel is a transverse section of a similar region of the retina. Paraffin embedded sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin as described in Materials and Methods. Cell layers are indicated at right: GCL, ganglion cell layer; IPL, inner plexiform layer; INL, inner nuclear layer; OPL, outer plexiform layer; ONL, outer nuclear layer; IS/OS– inner segment/outer segment of the photoreceptor cells; RPE/C, retinal pigment epithelium/cells. Arrowheads in center and right panel indicated regions where pigmented cells have been lost.
