A DNA fragment, including the nisR-nisK genes, the 3′ part of nisP (117 residues), and the 5′ end of nisF (36 residues), was integrated into the chromosome by gene replacement (14). As a result, a large part of pepN and the last 123 nucleotides of napC were removed. The integrated fragment is indicated in black, and the removed sequence is indicated in grey. Numbers indicate the reference positions in the annotated genome sequence of L. lactis MG1363 (33).
