Effect of 2-mercapthoethanol on the induction of degP. Wild-type cells harboring a plasmid carrying the degP-lacZ fusion gene and either pSW77 or pSWIF were grown to the early logarithmic phase of growth (OD₆₆₀ = 0.2), and then the expression of plasmid-encoded LolA proteins was induced with 0.2% arabinose in the presence and absence of 20 mM 2-mercapthoethanol (2-ME) for 2 h. β-Galactosidase activity was then measured as described for Fig. 2A.
