Model of the interaction of syt with the plasma membrane during Ca2+-stimulated exocytosis. In the absence of Ca2+, syt is docked onto bilayers through the Ca2+-independent interaction of C2A. The positively charged regions on C2A and C2B help to align the protein on the bilayer so that Ca2+-dependent membrane binding can occur. When Ca2+ enters the terminal, both C2 domains engage the bilayer, triggering a synchronous burst of neurotransmitter release.
