Effect of VCX1 disruption on vacuolar transport of potassium and calcium. At the indicated time (white arrow) 50 mm Na2SO4 and K2SO4 (B) or 100 mm of NaCl and KCl (C) was added to collapse the pH gradient across the vacuolar membrane of W303 nhx1Δvnx1Δvcx1Δ resulting in a cation-dependent H+ movement and alkalinization of the vesicular lumen.
