T. gondii GPIs require galectin-3 but not galectin-1 to induce TNF-α production in macrophages. Peritoneal macrophages from wild type (129Sv), galectin-1−/−, galectin-3−/−, and galectin-1/3−/− mice were incubated for 24 h with medium alone or with the six different GPIs (I–VI) at 2 μm. Supernatants were assayed for TNF-α production using a sandwich ELISA. Values represent the means ± S.D. of triplicate samples.
