Ftz orthologs have similar homeodomain sequences but vary in their cofactor interaction motifs and protein lengths. Residues in the segmentation LXXLL, homeotic YPWM, and homeodomain are shown as identical (gray) or similar (yellow) to the most common amino acid at that position in Ftz. All Ftz proteins share a characteristic nine amino acid N-terminal homeodomain arm (KRT/sRQT/sYT/sR/k). Sequences in red were isolated in this study.
