Fig. 3b Top view of an elliptical airway that is tilted with respect to the CT z-axis. The solid inner and outer ellipses are the limits of the airway seen in the CT image (CT ellipses). The Center ellipse, half way between the inner and outer ellipses, is used in finding the airway walls. (ai, bi) are the major and minor axes of the inner edge of the airway. (ao, bo) are the major and minor axes of the outer edge of the airway. Since this airway is circular, the major and minor axes are equal.
