Patient demonstrating unfavourable positioning of the graft during surgery. In this patient (case no 7), an area underneath the geographic atrophy was used as the preferred retinal locus of fixation prior to surgery. The graft was placed within the area of the geographic atrophy. Two years after surgery, the geographic atrophy increased in size, causing the patient to change the fixation to a peripapillary area. This resulted in a decrease in visual acuity from 20/50 at baseline to 20/160 at 2 years after surgery.
