The difference in branch diameter between axons terminating in normal and deafferented VPL is maximal for the terminal branches (top), reflecting the number of varicosities per branch, which is progressively smaller with the increase of the topological distance (centripetal order) from the axon ending (centripetal order = 0) to more proximal branches.
