The evolutionary relationship between three bacterial species with proline-containing Bridge Helices is shown on a rooted phylogenetic tree calculated using maximum-likelihood methods from a concatenation of representative protein sequences [63]. The three species occupy widely divergent branches, strongly suggesting that the proline substitutions evolved independently, rather than were derived from a recently shared ancestor.
