Making self judgments results in increased BOLD response in the frontal midline. In experiment 1 making attribute judgments about the self (warm colors) relative to a well known, but personally unfamiliar, other (former U.S. president George W. Bush) (cool colors) shows increased BOLD response (an indirect measure of activity) across a widespread network that prominently includes the rACC and aMPFC in the frontal midline and the midcingulate cortex. Regions in the rACC and aMPFC modulating in this contrast were used in unbiased ROI analyses in experiments 2–4. Maps are thresholded at p < 0.001, uncorrected.
