Bone mineral synthesis by hUCMSCs. (A) Mineral area percentage. (B) SEM of minerals synthesized by the encapsulated hUCMSCs. (C) XRD pattern of the minerals synthesized by the hUCMSC. (D) XRD of a known hydroxyapatite formed at a physiological temperature of 37 °C, provided by Dr. Shozo Takagi at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. The XRD patterns confirm that the substance made by the cells was apatitic. The lower height of the XRD peaks for the cell-synthesized minerals suggests that they were a low-crystalline apatite.
