Bacteria-exposed bone marrow-derived cells induce regulatory gene up-regulation to lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Non-pathogenic Bifidobacterium breve (4 × 105 CFU/ml) were added to bone marrow cultures for 7 days in the presence of granulocyte–macrophage colony-stimulating factor. At harvest, cells were washed and re-plated with LPS (1 μg/ml) for 18 hr. Cell lysates were analysed for gene expression of regulatory proteins irak3, socs1 and tollip.
