DMPC vesicle solubilization. The apoA-I variants were able to transform a turbid dispersion of unilamellar vesicles into nanodisks, as evident by the rapid decrease in light scatter intensity of the sample (measured by the absorbance at 325 nm). Shown are wild-type apoA-I (closed circles) and S36A apoA-I (open circles). The light scatter intensity remained unchanged in the absence of protein (closed triangles). apoA-I, apolipoprotein A-I; DMPC, dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine.
