Neurons lacking SMC1 have defects in activity-induced BDNF transcription. Cortical neurons were infected with lentivirus expressing siRNAs targeting luciferase (control) or SMC1 and stimulated with KCl for 4 h. c-fos (A) and BDNF (B) mRNA levels were measured by using qRT-PCR. Neurons depleted of SMC1 had normal KCl-mediated induction of c-fos but BDNF induction was greatly decreased, similar to that observed in neurons lacking CTCF.
