Overview of H2 generation pathways in different bacteria. In C. saccharolyticus (A), H2 is produced from NADH and Fdred, generated in the breakdown of glucose into acetate and CO2 via the EMP pathway. The H2 generation pathway in several clostridia carrying out acetate-type fermentation (B) is different from that in C. saccharolyticus in that H2 is generated solely from Fdred. NADH (generated in the EMP pathway) is converted to Fdred via NADH:ferredoxin oxidoreductase catalyzed reaction. In Enterobacteria (C), H2 is generated from formate, which is produced in the acetate pathway through the PFL-catalyzed reaction.
