Roots were from 2-week-old plants grown on 5 mm NH₄NO₃ and following nitrogen starvation for 4 d (Root-N). Nodules (Nods) were harvested at different times following inoculation. Cell cultures are of Medicago varia. B, Roots following inoculation (at T = 0) with S. meliloti wild type (Wt) or a non-nodulating mutant (nodA).
