Stimulation of caspase-3 activity in muscle of rats with acute diabetes. Caspase-3 activity was measured in gastrocnemius muscles of 12 pairs of rats with acute diabetes (DM) and their respective pair-fed, sham-injected controls. Activity was calculated as the amount of DEVD-AMC hydrolyzed per gastrocnemius muscle, and caspase-3 activity in the muscle of the diabetic and respective pair-fed control rat is connected by a line. On average there was a 47% ± 7% increase with acute diabetes (P < 0.01).
