In order to evaluate the localization of neural crest derived and placodal neurons within the jugular–nodose complex, X-Gal staining was performed in Wnt1Cre/R26R mice. Neural crest derived cells formed the rostral pole of the ganglion whereas the body and caudal pole of the ganglion comprised the placodal cells (A–D). A jugular ganglion, entirely consisting of neural crest derived cells, can be recognized as the top half of an hourglass like structure on the vagus in some ganglia (C and D).
