Diagram of early and late stages of global genome nucleotide excision repair in cells from normal and XP-B patients. From 0.5 to 3 h, DDR proteins accumulate in normal and XP-B cells indicating that NER is not required for this process. Wip1 is induced in the normal cells. By 24 h in the normal cells the phosphorylated DDR proteins have been removed and apoptosis has occurred. Wip1 is not induced in the XP-B cells where NER proteins and phosphorylated DDR proteins persist and are associated with unrepaired CPD and apoptosis is inhibited.
