The force of contraction, measured with the transducer represented in Figure 4, of the silk deposited during five independent spitting episodes by Scytodes thoracica. Nearly all of the contraction occurs in the first 0.2 s after deposition and, depending in part on the number of silk strands involved, can reach an aggregate force of nearly 0.3 mN. The dynamics of this process can be viewed in Video 4.
