Table 5.

Chest X–ray findings in PE (2,4, 1214)

Normal X–ray in 10–20% of cases
X–ray changes suggestive of PE (proximal site without pulmonary infarction; associated high risk ) with following features:
  • unilateral hyperinflation

  • increased pulmonary hilar shadows due to pulmonary artery dilatation

  • Westmark sign ( increased vascular markers in the opposite lung)

  • cardiac and vessels changes

  • typical signs of lobar/segmental artery obstruction in 5–10% of the cases

  • elevated diaphragm on the affected side

X–ray changes where pulmonary infarction is associated (distal site)
  • periferic shadow more often in the shape of a triangle

  • small pleural effusion on the same side

  • elevated diaphragm on the same side
