Schematic showing the involvement of ARNT/HIF-1β in insulin release. Glycolysis, DIC, OGC, and anaplerosis are significantly reduced in the absence of ARNT/HIF-1β in β-cells. In addition, ARNT/HIF-1β appears to also be involved in the regulation of glucose-induced fatty acid and glutamate metabolism (data not shown). Interestingly, ARNT/HIF-1β does not seem to play a significant role in the regulation ATP production in β-cells.
