Figure 6.

Acute inhibition of AlstR-expressing Phox2b neurons in the ventrolateral brainstem has no effect on resting breathing but attenuates the CO2-induced increases in respiratory activity in conscious rats. A, Time-condensed record depicting respiratory rate and raw and integrated EMGDIA in response to CO2 challenges (6% in inspired air) in control conditions and following i.c.v. administration of allatostatin (2 mm; 10 μl) in an animal transduced with PRSx8-AlstR-EGFP-LV in the ventrolateral brainstem. Note the depression of the CO2-evoked inspiratory frequency and EMGDIA amplitude responses, but no significant changes in basal breathing pattern (below). B, Expanded recordings of the raw and integrated EMGDIA. C, Summary data showing the effect of allatostatin on respiratory rate and minute respiration in rats transduced with PRSx8-AlstR-EGFP-LV in the ventrolateral brainstem. *p < 0.05; n = 6.
