(a) When invaded, the host cells and their associated ECM must deform to accommodate the invader. (b) A spherical invader creates a compressive strain in any radial direction and tensile strain in any direction perpendicular to a radius. (c) The strain generated at any point in the host by two invaders is the sum of the strains owing to each invader.
