Hyperpolarization of the mitochondrial membrane potential by sodium hydrosulphide (NaHS) (10−4 mol·L−1; left arrow). Isolated colonic crypts were loaded with rhodamine 123 as indicated by the inset. At the end of the experiment, Carbonyl cyanide 4-(trifluoromethoxy) phenylhydrazone (3) (FCCP; 10−6 mol·L−1; right arrow) was administered. The rhodamine 123 fluorescence is given in arbitrary units. Line interruptions are caused by omission of time intervals of 5–10 min in order to synchronize the tracings of individual records to the administration of drugs.
