Abnormal accumulation of phosphorylated tau in cell bodies and dendrites of PFC neurons of htau mice occurs with age with no apparent changes to neuronal density. Cresyl violet staining of layer III PFC in 3-month-old (a) and 12-month-old (b) htau mice show no apparent differences in neuronal density. Immunohistochemistry using antibody AT8 reveals the presence of hyperphosphorylated tau in the somata (asterisks) and dendrites (arrow) of htau mice at 3 months (c) and 12 months (d) of age. e Higher magnification of AT8-immunoreactive neurons from d.
