Images of discarded signal in (a) PLACE and (b) GESTE for a single time point. In each method, a coherent addition is performed to cancel residual artifact. In PLACE, this signal is dominated by the residual ghost signal present after interleaving. In GESTE, this signal is limited to artifacts from parallel imaging and field inhomogeneity effects. Significantly more signal is lost with PLACE, which can lead to unwanted variability in an image series.
