Sequence and timing of trial events. A: Target-selection task. Trials began with subjects directing gaze to a central fixation point. The fixation point transiently turned into a color cue. After a randomized delay, the fixation point was extinguished and the stimuli appeared. If the stimuli were moving (top panel), the monkey had to smoothly pursue the target that matched the color cue. If they were stationary (middle panel), the monkey had to make a saccade to the correct target. In the presence of a single dot (bottom panel), the monkey was rewarded for pursuing the target.
