Proposed role of hypoxia and WT1 in the developing heart. A major function of WT1 is the control of epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) of epicardial cells. Epicardium-derived mesenchymal cells give rise to vascular endothelial and smooth muscle cells as well as interstitial fibroblasts and cardiomyocytes in the heart. RA, retinoic acid.
