The cognitive functioning curve is shifted downward, leading patients to cross the threshold for clinical dementia earlier. Clinicians should aggressively treat conditions that have the potential to reduce cognitive reserve and information processing capacity, such as hypertension, diabetes, sleep disorders, and side-effects from medication.
