The transmembrane domain of CED-9 is necessary and sufficient for localization at mitochondrial outer membranes. The importance of the CED-9 transmembrane domain for localization at mitochondria was tested by examining GFP fluorescence in the body wall muscles of animals transgenic for a gfp::ced-9 transgene. Confocal images were obtained from transgenic ced-9(n2812lf); ced-3(n717lf) animals stained with MitoTracker Red, as described in Materials and Methods. Animals carry an extrachromosomal array driven by a myo-3 promoter for (a) gfp::ced-9, (b) gfp::ced-9Δ TM and (c) gfp::TM. The scale bar corresponds to 10 μm, and ‘n’ marks the nucleus
