VacA-induced cell death involves the mitochondrial apoptotic gateway. DKO MEF cells were genetically and selectively corrected: the mitochondrial defect by targeting BAX exclusively to mitochondria (a), and the ER defect by overexpressing SERCA (b). Cells were incubated and assayed for viability as in Figure 1. Cells not exposed to H. pylori CS are defined as untreated cells. Data represent mean±S.D. of 20 independent experiments. Significance was determined using Student’s t-test for paired data of CS-intoxicated cells versus untreated cells; **P<0.02; ***P<0.01
