Energetics of triad 1. The horizontal bars represent different states of the molecule, and the arrows the relevant interconversion pathways. The energies were estimated from spectroscopic and cyclic voltammetric data, as explained in the text, and are relevant in relatively polar solvents such as 2-methyltetrahydrofuran. In cyclohexane, the energy of P•+-C60•−-P is higher because of loss of stabilization of the ions by solvent dipoles.
