Increased apoptosis in the OE of Insm1-/- embryos does not precede the decrease in nascent neurons. By E14.5 (compare (C) and (D)), more ACC3+ cells are detected in Insm1-/- mice than in their paired Insm1+/+ littermates (n = 3 embryo pairs, P < 0.05), an increase that persists at E18.5 (compare (E) and (F); n = 3 embryo pairs, P = 0.11).
