A schematic of the stimuli used in Experiment 3. Participants listened to two intervals containing spectrally segregated harmonic complexes and indicated the interval in which the F0 of the high region complex differed from that of the low region complex(es). Increased spacing between lines and lighter shading indicate a higher F0. Harmonic complexes to be compared were presented simultaneously (A, C) or sequentially (B, D), with (C, D) or without (A, B) tonal precursors identical to the tone presented in the low spectral region.
