Solid bars denote bacteria that evolved alone, and dashed bars bacteria that coevolved with the phage during the microcosm experiment. Phage selection increase bacterial phage-resistance at the expense of decreased maximum population size in the absence of phage. The data is pooled over temperature treatments and the error bars denote ± s.e.m. (N = 5).
