Overview of mechanisms commonly included in plasticity models. The numbers are used in the taxonomy of the models in Table 3. A standard STDP (Song et al., 2000; Froemke et al., 2006) that computes the change in plasticity directly from the relative timing of pre- and postsynaptic spikes would be denoted by (1, 4). Some kind of presynaptic influence on the postsynaptic side (e.g., if a PSC raises the postsynaptic potential) is denoted by 9, a metaplastic sliding threshold by 10, etc.
