(A) Firing rate model. Two neuron populations A and B are mutually coupled with negative weights. Both populations receive US-CS and context-specific (CTX) inputs. These external inputs can exhibit LTP. (B) Spiking neural network model. The network consists of 3400 excitatory and 600 inhibitory LIF neurons. The neurons are interconnected in a recurrent fashion. US-CS input is provided to all neurons. CTX input is fed only to two subpopulations of excitatory neurons. The external inputs (CS, US and CTX) are modeled as rate-modulated Poisson spike trains.
