Schematic representation of two Nup98 precursor proteins and TPR. Two alternatively spliced mRNAs of the Nup98 gene code for a Nup98-6kDa and Nup98-Nup96 precursor, both of them autoproteolytically cleaved at residue 863. The cleaved products remain associated with each other. Because of alternative splicing, the 6kDa region of Nup96 (indicated in red) lacks six carboxyl-terminal residues that are present in the 6kDa peptide of the Nup98-6kDa precursor. TPR contains an amino-terminal region of 1,628 residues that is likely to form a coiled coil, whereas the carboxyl-terminal remainder is highly charged.
