UvrD unwinds the ends of DSBs in the 3′-to-5′ direction, and RecJ digests the 5′ end (step 1). 3′ single-stranded tails are coated by SSB proteins (step 2). RecF binds to the ssDNA-dsDNA junction (step 3) and promotes the assembly of the RecOR complex (RecO-to-RecR ratio, 4:2) onto the junctions (step 4).
