Fig. 6. PkaC2 modulates the virulence of the ΔpkaC1 mutant.

Fig. 6

CF-1 outbred mice were immunosuppressed with triamcinolone acetonide and inoculated intranasally with 105 conidia.

A. ΔpkaC1 is attenuated in virulence relative to WT (P = 0.003), whereas ΔpkaC2 and the ΔpkaC1-complemented strain (ΔpkaC1 C′) are indistinguishable from WT.

B. The five strains can be divided into three statistically distinct groups: (i) WT and ΔpkaC1::PgpdA-pkaC2, (ii) ΔpkaC1 and (iii) ΔpkaC1ΔpkaC2 and saline (n = 12–16 per group). Pairwise log rank values; WT versus ΔpkaC1 (P < 0.001), WT versus ΔpkaC1::PgpdA-pkaC2 (P = 0.6), ΔpkaC1 versus ΔpkaC1ΔpkaC2 (P < 0.001), ΔpkaC1ΔpkaC2 versus saline (P = 0.99).
