K. pneumoniae (5.5 × 108 CFU/ml) was cocultured in DNB medium (pH 6.5) with B. bacteriovorus (control) or B. bacteriovorus supplemented with a 0.1 M concentration (exceptions noted) of the following carbohydrates: arabinose (Ara), dextrose (Dex), galactose (Gal), fructose (Fru), mannose (Man), sucrose (Suc), lactose (Lac), xylose (Xyl), and glycerol (Gly; 0.54 M). Medium pH and host CFU numbers were measured following 24 h of incubation.
