TABLE 4.
Growth of selected field isolates from different host species in defined medium supplemented with pyruvate or fucosea
| Host species and genotype | Rfucose | Rpyruvate |
|---|---|---|
| Turkey | ||
| fucP positive | 2.77 × 103 | 4.92 × 103 |
| fucP negative | 1.64 × 10° | 5.35 × 102 |
| Chicken | ||
| fucP positive | 2.44 × 103 | 9.78 × 103 |
| fucP negative | 5.46 × 10−2 | 9.99 × 103 |
| Sheep | ||
| fucP positive | 1.86 × 103 | 1.08 × 103 |
| fucP negative | 1.00 × 10°b | 1.93 × 107 |
| Humanc | ||
| fucP positive | 2.18 × 104 | 4.03 × 104 |
| fucP negative | 2.50 × 101 | 3.05 × 106 |
Genotypes were determined by PCR. R values were calculated as CFU ml−1 with substrate divided by CFU ml−1 in basal defined medium (see Materials and Methods).
Growth with fucose was below the detection limit (<101 CFU ml−1).
The fucP-positive strain is ATCC BAA-223, and the fucP-negative strain is a clinical isolate from the United States.
