Representative photomicrographs of cresyl violet and TUNEL staining in the striatum, the hippocampal CA1 subregion, the dentate gyrus, and the cerebral cortex. Three days after bilateral common carotid artery occlusion (BCCAO), the cells were diffusely shrunken in the striatum and were TUNEL-positive. Mild morphological ischemic changes in the hippocampal CA1 subregion, the CA4 subregion, the dentate gyrus, and cerebral cortex (mainly in the second to forth layers) were also observed (magnification×100; scale bar=200 μm; TUNEL, terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated uridine 5′-triphosphate-biotin nick-end labeling).
