Expression was measured for petals (A), leaves (B) and sepals (C). Mean relative expression values (± s.e.m. when more than one sample was available) are reported for each color morph across developmental stages in petal and leaf tissue (sepal tissue was pooled across developmental stages). A purple young bud, purple young leaf and purple anthesis sepal served as the reference sample when calculating relative expression. Sample sizes are as follows (purple, white): petals in early bud: N = 1, 2; petals in late bud: N = 1, 3; petals when flowers are opening: N = 1, 1; petals at anthesis: N = 1, 2; young leaves: N = 1, 3; medium leaves: N = 1, 3; old leaves: N = 2, 3; mixed sepals: N = 2, 5.
