Firing frequency of abducens motoneurons during spontaneous eye movements. The unit was simultaneously recorded with both the eye position, using the field coil search technique, and the lateral rectus muscle tension, using a strain gauge recorder (called muscle force transducer). Note how tension resembles precisely the fine variations in firing frequency profile during steady eye fixations (arrows).
